THE GRIT&ROCK FOUNDATION ANNOUNCES SUPPORT FOR ELISABETH REVOL’S BID TO BECOME THE FIRST FEMALE TO CLIMB EVEREST AND LHOTSE WITHOUT SUPPLEMENTARY OXYGEN IN ONE SEASON

Today a French mountaineer Elisabeth Revol will be launching her Everest summit bid from Camp 4 on the South Col in Nepal. She will be climbing without supplementary oxygen and, if successful, will become only 8th woman in history and the first French woman to do so. Just a few days ago Elisabeth stood on the summit ridge of Makalu, world’s 5th highest mountain. She plans to continue her summit bid post-Everest ascent on Lhotse, world’s 4th highest peak. Linking climbs without supplementary oxygen of these two summits have been achieved only once in history by the legendary alpinist Anatoly Boukreev in the wake of the Everest tragedy in 1996. The three summits have never been climbed in one season.
Elisabeth Revol said: ‘Climbing Everest has been a childhood dream of mine. I feel that my experiences to date have brought me to the point when I am able to meet this formidable challenge.

Masha Gordon, the founder of GRIT&ROCK said: “We are pleased to enable Elisabeth Revol’s bid to make mountaineering history. Her dedication to practicing alpinism through the choice of difficult routes, including winter ascents of 8,000 meter peaks demonstrate tenacity, judgement and skill. She is a formidable yet extraordinarily humble role model in a sport where daring high-altitude ascents remains largely a domain of men.”

ABOUT ELISABETH REVOL: 37-year old Elisabeth Revol was born and raised in the French Alps. She honed her alpine skills as a member of the elite FFCAM team. Her passion for high-altitude climbing has taken her from her home range of Massif des Ecrins to Bolivia, Nepal and Pakistan. In 2008 she set a world record by climbing two 8,000m peaks of GI and GII in Pakistan in just 52 hours solo and without supplementary oxygen.

ABOUT GRIT&ROCK: GRIT&ROCK is a UK-based charity dedicated to using mountaineering and outdoors to help young women build grit and resilience. In February 2017, the foundation awarded an inaugural annual GRIT&ROCK FIRST ASCENT EXPEDITION PRIZE to promote and encourage female participation in pioneering alpine ascents and to further exploration of the unclimbed peaks.
